Wild Things
(A link at the bottom of the page takes you to more attractions.)

This is black bear country. I had the pleasure of watching these two from a safe distance
and the good fortune to have a strong telephoto lens with me. There were four bears
resting in the tree. The bear on the lower limb kept pawing at the sleeping bear as if to say
"Come on. Lets go get in someone's trash for breakfast."
This brings us to an important point. Never leave trash outside. Never leave food
or containers that held food outside. Chances are you won't see any bears but remember
never approach the wildlife, never frighten or threaten it, don't feed or attempt to pet.

The Yellow-bellied Marmot
The Yellow-bellied Marmot is also known as a Rock Chuck. Yes, he looks big but
fully grown this member of the marmot genus weighs only about six pounds.
Marmots make their homes under rocks to keep safe from their predators.
Look for them in groups but not to be mistaken with the smaller prairie dogs.

Big Horn Sheep
I'm thinking that both of these Big Horns are male with one being a youngster.
I came across them when driving to a friend's home for a barbeque near Cripple Creek.
Apparently, you can tell whether one is male or female by the curvature of their horns.
The female horns are shorter and don't have as much of a curve as the males.
In the fall the males will duel for dominance with other males in the form of head butting.
Look high on rock ledges if you want to catch a glimpse of these characters.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs is home to over 750 animals.
The Zoo claims that their African Rift Valley is as close to Africa as you can
get without a passport and their primate exhibit is the envy of other zoos.
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo hosts the largest holiday light show in the area from
just after the first week in December to the end of the month. They have nearly one-
million lights, over forty animated light sculptures and toasty fires to warm by.
The zoo is 28 miles from Little Rocky and 34 miles from Whispering Pines.
